EUC World started back in 2019. At first, it was supposed to be a small app I was building just for myself — something to use during my rides on an electric unicycle. I wanted it to record my tours, build my riding log, show distance, battery level, speed and riding time. I also wanted it to help keep me safe by warning me when I was going too fast or getting close to the limits of the wheel. It quickly turned out that other riders needed exactly the same kind of app, so EUC World made its way to Google Play.
A few years have passed since then. During that time, EUC World has grown from a small personal project into one of the most feature-rich and valued apps for electric unicycle riders, used by people all around the world. But a lot has changed over those years. The world has changed, and pretty much everything has become damn expensive. My life has changed too — today I need to take better care of my health, my time and my future. I can no longer afford to run a project this big on a pro bono basis. Our community has changed as well. Support for EUC World has dropped significantly, while user expectations have continued to grow. So if EUC World is going to keep existing, improving and meeting those expectations, the way the app works financially has to change.
TL;DR
In September, the way EUC World is used will change. EUC World will remain free for the most basic features. Other features that have been free until now will require a Pro account, priced at EUR 15.99 per year. The current Premium account will be renamed to Elite. Its price and feature set will remain unchanged. There will also be a new Ultimate account — the highest EUC World tier, intended mainly for people who have made an exceptional contribution to supporting and developing the project. I hope these changes will allow EUC World to develop faster and become even more reliable, polished and capable. You will need to use the most recent versions of the app, as the old versions will no longer be supported and will not work.
A few words of explanation
For many years, I’ve shared my knowledge, experience and time with you. I did it out of passion, without taking any payment for my work. The running costs of the project were covered mainly by Premium subscriptions, and Premium users have never represented more than a small percentage of all EUC World accounts. For a while, that model worked reasonably well. But over the last few years, maintaining and developing EUC World this way has become harder and harder.
Apart from a few rare exceptions many years ago, I have never really been able to rely on meaningful support from EUC manufacturers. For quite some time now, I haven’t received any support from dealers either. Technical and development support from users has also dropped significantly. Notable exceptions are Marty Backe and Rob Fail, also known as Wheel Good Time, who still occasionally provide me with valuable data that helps with EUC World development. I’m very grateful to them for that. But it’s still only a drop in the ocean. I also don’t receive wheels for testing or development. Hardware, tools, infrastructure and development all cost money. At the same time, expectations around the app keep growing, along with the amount of work required to maintain it.
That’s why it simply can’t continue to be the case that an app this expensive and time-consuming to develop remains almost entirely free. I know we’ve all become used to “free” apps. But as the saying goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Just because you don’t pay for an app with money doesn’t mean it’s really free. In fact, you pay by watching ads, by being profiled, or by having your sensitive data shared with other companies.
EUC World has been created by EUC rider for other EUC riders. I use exactly the same version of the app as other users. It has no ads. It does not profile its users. User data is not sold or shared with other companies. I really care about my and your privacy. And that is not going to change.
So from now on, using most of EUC World’s features will mean covering a small part of the cost of keeping the project alive and moving it forward. On a yearly basis, it really isn’t much for an app that, for many riders, is one of the basic tools they use with their EUC. After all, the wheel itself wasn’t free either. We pay for pedals, power pads, protective gear and all kinds of accessories. EUC World is simply another accessory for your wheel.
EUC World stays free for casual riders
As I mentioned earlier, EUC World will remain free for basic features such as reading wheel parameters and changing wheel settings. Maybe that’s all you need. If so, you’ll still be able to use EUC World completely free of charge. I think that for many casual riders, the free version of EUC World will be more than enough.
EUC World Pro
Pro riders who expect more and use the app’s more advanced features will be able to choose a Pro account for EUR 15.99 per year. Pro will unlock a much broader range of features, including alarms, voice messages, smartwatch apps and many other functions. Pro users will also get access to technical support, which until now has only been available to Premium users.
EUC World Elite
Premium users have always been a special part of the EUC World community. Without their support, EUC World would have disappeared a long time ago. That’s why the Premium account will be renamed Elite. The new name is meant to better reflect the role of the users who have supported the project the most over the years. The price of Elite will stay exactly the same at EUR 29.99 per year. The available features will stay the same as well.
EUC World Ultimate
Ultimate will be the highest EUC World account tier. It will be intended primarily for people who have made an exceptional contribution to the project. The EUC World Ultimate badge will be a visible sign of belonging to the small group of people who have gone above and beyond in supporting EUC World. Ultimate will also be available to users who simply want to support the project more strongly, at EUR 39.99 per year.
Over time, Ultimate will get additional special features available exclusively at this tier. The first one will be turn-by-turn navigation. Ultimate users will also receive priority technical support, as well as my help and advice with other EUC-related topics.
The choice is yours
Of course, you can also stop using EUC World and switch to another app. There are already several alternatives available on Google Play, and new ones appear from time to time — including new projects, often vibe coded using AI tools. You can even try building your own app. It can be a really interesting and rewarding experience!
My goal has never been — and still isn’t — to make EUC World an app used by as many people as possible at any cost. I want it to be used mainly by people who see its value, actually make use of what it offers, and want the project to keep moving forward. I also want working on EUC World to continue giving me satisfaction and the feeling that putting my time and energy into it is worth it.
Lately, I’ve been seeing more and more EUC-related projects being shut down or abandoned. Recently, MrMayArt, known among other things for the excellent Cyclope and Neonowe lights, announced the end of his long-running activity.
I don’t want to shut down EUC World. I want to keep actively developing it — for the benefit of the entire EUC rider community. But for that to be possible, the conditions under which the project is developed have to reflect the realities of today’s world.
